What is the Thyroid Gand and Thyroid Hormone?

The thyroid gland is an endocrine gland in the body just under the Adam's apple in the neck. The thyroid gland secretes thyroid hormone, which is essential to control the body cells' metabolic rate, promote normal growth of the body and so on.

What is Hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism is a condition characterized by abnormally low thyroid hormone production. This endocrine disorder is more common in women than in men, and its incidence increases with age especially after 50s. The causes of hypothyroidism include thyroiditis (inflammation of thyroid), thyroid cell damage due to radioactive iodine or thyroid surgery, severe iodine deficiency and insufficient thyroid-stimulating hormone due to defects in pituitary function.

Since thyroid hormone is needed for many cellular processes, inadequated thyroid causes widespread symptoms in the body which include:
  • Fatigue
  • Cold intolerance
  • Depression
  • Weight gain
  • Excessive sleepiness
  • Dry, coarse hair
  • Dry skin
  • Constipation
  • Increased cholesterol levels
  • Decreased concentration
  • Enlarged thyroid

Treatment

Hypothyroidism is treated wih sunthetic oral thyroid hormone. The therapy for hypothyroidism is monitored at approximately six week intervals until it becomes stable.
